Self Assessment

Self assessment is becoming more popular in schools with pupils looking at their own progress and looking at the next steps in their learning. Schools can use the detail in Connecting Steps to help in the self assessment process. The small steps in our breakdown are simple for pupils to use and they can look at the different points and make decisions about the skills they have learnt in the unit.

Child thinking about assessmentTeachers can print out the individual assessment sheets and ask the pupils what skills they think they have learnt, they can also look at the skills they need to achieve to complete the level. This information is invaluable and allows pupils to monitor their learning, understand their learning and know what they are aiming for.

By using standardised assessment points rather than pupils writing a paragraph on what they have learnt allows schools to measure the progress within a unit. They can use Connecting Steps to show the progress as a percentage of a level the pupil has achieved within the unit. Schools can then use this information to look at which units have been the most productive, giving the most progression.

Empowering the pupils with their own learning greatly increases pupil involvement and interest in what they are learning. Understanding the aims of a unit at the beginning helps the pupils participate more in the lessons as they understand what they are looking for in the outcomes.
