Installation

Installation of Connecting Steps is relatively simple. Use the following information to decide what you need to install on the computer.

 

Server

Install the database and all the programs.

 

Network Client

Either place a shortcut on the desktop to Connecting Steps V3 on the server or install the Connecting Steps V3 software and the Student Manager (optional)

 

Standalone Machine

Install the database and all the programs. If it is low powered you could install Connecting Steps V2 to increase performance on slower machines, but this will reduce the features and you cannot use the GAP software.

 

Laptop with a Wireless Connection

You cannot install Connecting Steps V3 and use the database on the laptop and connect to the database on the server, it can only work with one database. If you want to use the software in the school on the main system and at home on the laptop, you can install Connecting Steps V2 to use on the laptop at home and either place a shortcut to Connecting Steps V3 on the desktop to the server or install the Connecting Steps V3 software and the Student Manager (optional)

There are 4 programs that are installed as part of the Connecting Steps Software

  • Connecting Steps - the main software, this is used to enter and view the data
  • Student Manager - you use this software to manage groups and to edit pupil information
  • Backup Manager - this is used to backup and restore the data
  • Steps Admin – this is used to manage users and also manage options for the software.

If you want to install individual applications on a computer, you can use the individual MSI files located in the msifiles folder on the CD.
