Our Engagement Steps assessment framework, for pupils not yet engaged in subject-specific learning, has been shortlisted as a finalist for this year's ERA awards. It was recognised in the category Special Education Resource or Equipment including ICT. The winners will be announced at an awards dinner on 22 March at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham.
Now in their 21st successful year, these awards focus on the resources, services and people that really make a practical impact on learning and the day-to-day work of the teachers in the classroom.
The judges were impressed by our entry outlining:
What makes Engagement Steps innovative
The impact it has on learning
How it helps enhance everyday school life
Its cost effectiveness
A teacher's view - James Waller, Deputy Head Teacher, Sunningdale School
“Using Engagement Steps we are able to help pupils consolidate the ‘skills’ they need to confidently access subject-specific learning. It has also provided us with simple, straightforward developmental frameworks to help us plan and track development beyond Cognition & Learning, extending into the other 3 areas of the SEND Code of Practice. This helps us to facilitate holistic personalised planning across each child’s development.”
Still using P Levels?
The Rochford Review: Final Report recognised that the subject-specific areas assessed by the P Levels were not appropriate for pupils with the most significant disabilities. We created Engagement Steps as an alternative to P Levels for the assessment of pupils previously assessed as working between P1-P6. Used within our Connecting Steps assessment software, Engagement Steps has been designed to identify and record the achievements of individuals with Severe Learning Disabilities (SLD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) who are not yet engaged in subject-specific learning.
